8th Comp Project

8th Comp Project

In this music composition project, you will be asked to choose from the following three assignments. Please note, that you only have 15 minutes to do your project, so move quickly.

1. The first assignment will study minimilism . Please write an 8 measure song using the following guidelines. Remember, these guidelines are not meant to stifle your creativity, but to teach you about the minimilistic movement. Follow these directions -

  1. Open the Allegro program.
  2. Choose File, New from Template, General Templates, then Grand Staff
  3. Familiarize yourself with the grand staff. Again.
  4. Next, choose three notes and three rhythms (use the simple entry palette to choose). Now, you can write your song with ONLY these three notes and these three rhythms for all eight measures
  1. When you are finished, Choose View, Page View, click the GREEN A on the main entry palette and DOUBLE CLICK the SMALL BOX above the Title and also above the composer.
  2. Next, go to File, Print Score, Setup, Choose the bottom printer (114) and click the Pages box and type 1 through 1. Then print and pick up your project in Mrs. Erickson's room to turn in.

The second assignment will study serialism . Please write an 8 measure song using the following guidelines. Remember, these guidelines are not meant to stifle your creativity, but to teach you about the serialism. Follow these directions -

  1. Click on the link above. You will have to choose a tone row at the bottom and print this out. Next, you will need to understand which note is "where" using the matrix that is ON THE SITE ABOVE.
  2. Open the Allegro program.
  3. Choose File, New from Template, General Templates, then Grand Staff
  4. Using 8th or 16th notes, put the notes in the order on your sheet. Repeat this, or move to the second row until you reach the 8th measure. After, write a bass line of some sort using notes of your choice. Be sure to listen to your atonal creation!
  5. When you are finished, Choose View, Page View, click the GREEN A on the main entry palette and DOUBLE CLICK the SMALL BOX above the Title and also above the composer.
  6. Next, go to File, Print Score, Setup, Choose the bottom printer (114) and click the Pages box and type 1 through 1. Then print and pick up your project in Mrs. Erickson's room to turn in.

3. The third assignment will study chance . Please write an 8 measure song using the following guidelines. Remember, these guidelines are not meant to stifle your creativity, but to teach you about chance music. Follow these directions -

  1. Click on the link above. Though you can watch the videos, do not spend too long. Next, try to WRITE WHATEVER YOU WANT. Though not truly chance music, you will get the idea.
  2. Open the Allegro program.
  3. Choose File, New from Template, General Templates, then Grand Staff
  4. You can write WHATEVER YOU WANT. It doesn't matter which note lengths that you choose, but the smaller the notes, the more chaotic and "chance like" the song will sound!
